The Black Swan at Oldstead is the world's best-rated restaurant on TripAdvisor

The Black Swan at Oldstead in North Yorkshre has been named by online reviews website TripAdvisor as the best rated in the world - the first time a UK venue has won the accolade.

The restaurant, owned by Tommy and James Banks and their family, holds a Michelin star and four AA rosettes and just pipped Raymond Blanc's Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons in New Milton, Oxfordshire, which was second place in the world.

The Black Swan at Oldstead's achievement brings the two-year reign of Martín Berasategui in Spain, which has held the title since 2015, to an end.

Commenting on the news, Tommy Banks (pictured), one of this year's Acorn Awards winners, said: "We are so happy with the news and would like to thank all of the TripAdvisor users who have rated their experience with us so highly, and recognised the hard work each member of the team puts into every element of running The Black Swan. It really is everyone in our fantastic team who has made this happen".

The Black Swan and Le Manoir are two of three UK restaurants to appear in the top 25 in the 2017 Travellers' Choice Restaurant awards. The third was Heston Blumenthal's the Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, which came 12th.

Beyond the world list, the Black Swan at Oldstead, Belmond Le Manoir Aux Quat'Saisons and the Fat Duck also appeared in Europe's top 25, coming in first, second and eighth respectively. Other UK winners in the Europe rankings include the Waterside Inn, also in Bray, placing 19th and the Three Chimneys in Colbost on the Isle of Skye following at 20th.

In the UK top 10, the Black Swan at Oldstead, Belmond Le Manoir Aux Quat'Saisons, The Fat Duck, the Waterside Inn and the Three Chimneys took the top five spots respectively. In sixth place was Cumbria's L'Enclume in Cartmel, while Adam's in Birmingham and Quay Fifteen in Southampton followed in seventh and eighth place respectively. London's The Five Fields was named UK's ninth best and Aizle in Edinburgh took tenth position.
