Bloc Hotels to launch second property at Gatwick Airport
The 244-bedroom hotel will open in autumn 2013, at a cost of £12m, within the former office building Norfolk House, adjacent to departures at the South Terminal.
Its development follows the signing of a long leasehold agreement between Gatwick Airport and Bloc Hotels, in association with Boxbuild.
Meanwhile, Bloc Hotels' first property, which opened in Birmingham in April 2011, is to be expanded with the addition of 24 apartment-style, long-stay rooms.
While the new build Birmingham hotel involved specially commissioned hotel room pods, the Gatwick property - which involves the conversion of an existing building - will involve factory manufactured bathrooms and pre-manufactured wall systems to form the rooms and corridors.
Each bedroom at the Gatwick hotel will incorporate the highest specification sound proofing alongside Samsung technology, Italian Artemide ambient lighting and Egyptian cotton linens.
Rob Morgan, founder of Bloc Hotels, said the opening of the Gatwick property will "revolutionise" the airport stay experience. "We will provide high quality, intelligently-designed rooms with facilities that have traditionally been the preserve of five star hotels, but in the best possible airport location and at affordable prices."
Bloc Hotels intends to open more properties in major transport hubs and city centres, both in the UK and overseas.
