S&NPC spends £2.5m restoring blaze pub
Scottish and Newcastle pub company (S&NPC) has spent £2.5m restoring a 15th century thatched pub that burned down in December 2008.
The George at Hatherleigh, which is reputed to be one of the UK's oldest pubs, has been fully restored and reopened, following months of liaising with English Heritage, West Devon Borough Council and local parish councillors to create designs that did justice to the original historic site.
The 13-bedroom inn's design has remained close to the feel of the old George hotel with its thatched roof and painted rendered walls, as well as using tonnes of reclaimed wood for the many areas of exposed timberwork.
The inn is leased to Urban & Country Leisure and is their fourth pub with S&NPC. "We are delighted to have Urban & Country Leisure on board. As successful operators of a number of outstanding boutique hotels and pubs, their expertise is ideally suited to a high quality country hotel and inn such as the George," said David Beswick, S&NPC operations & sales director.
"The old George Hotel was a unique and well known landmark. Its destruction was a great loss but we are all extremely excited by the redevelopment. The traditional materials and construction methods have created a building whose appearance is almost identical to the original and we are confident it will prove as popular," he added.
