Fifth floor refit

The Fifth Floor restaurant and bar in Harvey Nichols' London store closed this week for a £1m overhaul, to reopen in mid-October. Head chef Simon Shaw will create a new menu, and architects Lifschutz Davidson will redesign the interior. The makeover will include new uniforms, cutlery and glassware.

Carluccio's eighth

Carluccio's opens its eighth Italian café, food shop and deli in Kent's Bluewater shopping centre on 24 July. The 3,600sq ft restaurant will seat 78 with a further 50 seats outside. An average three-course meal will cost £16 per person.

Esquire debut

The first Esquire Coffee House in Scotland opens in Glasgow in late July. Franchisee Tony Lappin will employ 10 people and the café will seat 50. The Canadian-owned chain plans to have 30 cafés in Scotland by the end of 2003.

Twice the quality

Choice Hotels Europe opens two London hotels this summer. The 156-bedroom Quality hotel at the ExCel exhibition centre opens on 31 July. It includes four restaurants and a leisure centre with swimming pool. Prices start from £122.50 per person. The 166-bedroom Quality Hotel Wembley opens at the end of August.

Quod for Brighton

Quod, the restaurant group run by Browns founder Jeremy Mogford and partner Gary Strivens, is due to open a 130-seat restaurant and 60-seat bar in Brighton in October. The group, which has two restaurants, in Oxford and London, closed its underperforming Birmingham site last month.
