I want to go into HR

Question

I am currently in the final year of a BA (Honours) degree in hospitality and tourism management. When I graduate I would like to go into the human resources area of the industry. However, my experience lies mainly in restaurant and front desk areas. I have covered some aspects of human resources on my course. However, I understand that most employers require a CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development) qualification, which I do not have. What would be the best course of action for me to take if I wanted to pursue this for my future career?

The CIPD qualification is a great way to open the door to interviews and to take the first steps into a career in HR. It would be of value to pursue this route. However, the qualification is not vital, as it is becoming equally important to have experience at the sharp end so that you can prove you can meet the demands of the business. When sending off your applications, focus on your strengths and experiences in human resources so far, and think about the areas you are specifically interested in, such as training or recruitment. There are many oppportunities to join the profession at a junior level, given the right skills and personal attributes, so don't get put off.
