Alpha hit by travel slump

Alpha Airports Group, the UK's largest airline caterer, reported a £8.4m operating profit for the first six months of this year, down 13% on the same period last year.

The group said this was in line with expectations, given the troubled aviation market. Its flight catering division fared the worst, suffering a 13.6% fall in sales to £67.7m, compared with a £78.4m last year. Meal volumes fell by 11.6%.

Contributing factors were a decline in long-haul travel and reduced free-meal provision by UK charter airlines.
