Independent verification scheme is aimed at delivering accurate greenhouse gas emissions figures for a product’s entire lifecycle
The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has certified Williams Refrigeration’s embodied carbon figures under its Embodied Carbon Verification (ECV) scheme.
The refrigerator manufacturer is using CIBSE TM65 mid-level calculation method for the figures, which display the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product’s entire lifecycle.
CIBSE’s independent verification scheme provides manufacturers with additional credibility by validating calculations through an industry-recognised body. Data for Williams’ products is set to be included in the upcoming CIBSE ECV register, which is expected to be the go-to source for consultants seeking data for their calculations and carbon reporting.
The results indicate that Williams’ embodied carbon figures are among the lowest in the industry.
Embodied carbon figures are rapidly gaining importance, as consultants, designers and operators look to comply with their environmental aspirations and obligations. Having a figure to encapsulate the embodied carbon in an appliance allows the operator and the specifier to select the most appropriate product for the project.
Williams responded to this demand and has now published embodied carbon calculations for all its core products.
Sales and marketing director Malcolm Harling said: “Talking to our business partners and end-user customers we realised early on that embodied carbon figures are set to become a ‘must-have’ for foodservice equipment suppliers.
“The engineering team, supported by our environmental consultants, have been working very hard to collate the data required to compute them as quickly and accurately as possible. Their success means we are amongst the first equipment manufacturers to have our calculations produced, verified by CIBSE and available within our Revit symbols in Specifi [equipment specification platform].
“There’s no doubt that embodied carbon figures will help our industry become more sustainable as foodservice operators, manufacturers, consultants, designers and dealers work together to deliver carbon net zero.”
Williams’ core products with embodied carbon figures include a selection of Jade counters and cabinets, blast chillers, chef’s drawers, Onyx prep stations, under broiler counters and the undercounter Amber and Aztra cabinets.
“These are our most popular models,” added Harling, “The team is working on having figures for all our product families in the near future.”
Embodied carbon data is available via Specifi or direct from Williams.
As part of its ongoing sustainability efforts, Williams has also recently made its UK delivery fleet carbon neutral, with all scope 1,2 and 3 emissions measured and offset to recognised certification standards.
