The team behind the Michelin-recommended Pelican in Notting Hill and the Bull in Charlbury will open a third pub this spring.
Phil Winser and James Gummer have teamed up with Oliver van Themsche, who leads business and acquisitions for the Public House group, to relaunch the Hero in London’s Maida Vale.
The Hero was previously run under the direction of chef Henry Harris as part of the Harcourt Inns portfolio and before that was known as the Truscott Arms.
In its new guise, the pub will serve British comfort food and cask ale on the ground floor, while the upstairs Grill Room will offer meats and fish cooked over an open fire.
The second floor will serve cocktails and host bartender-in-residence nights, while the top floor will act as a dedicated events space.
Winser and Gummer have worked with head chef Ed Baillieu on the menu, which will include four quarter of cod with brown butter; and lamb chops with mint and peas.
“Pubs provide the perfect setting for us to demonstrate the incredible produce and farming practices that we have here in the UK, and this continually drives our menus,” said Gummer.
Both the Pelican and the Bull have been awarded Michelin Bib Gourmands, which denote ‘good value, good quality cooking’.
Giles Coren wrote in The Times that the Bull served “the best pie and pint of your life” while the Evening Standard’s Jimi Famurewa praised the Pelican for its “pointed lack of fuss”.
The Caterer also visited the Bull for a Menuwatch in January this year.
The Hero dates from 1878 and the team have stripped back and restored its original Victorian features.
“The lights and staircase will serve as storytellers, narrating the history of this pub," said Winser.
