Jeremy Clarkson reveals new pub’s name and opening date

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed that the name of his new pub will be the Farmer’s Dog, and that the site will open on Friday 23 August at midday.

The premises in Burford, Oxfordshire, was the former Windmill restaurant and wedding venue.

A photo on the Farmer’s Dog’s new Instagram account shows that the pub will serve Hawkstone beer on tap, which is brewed by Clarkson and the Cotswold Brewing Co.

Clarkson tweeted on 15 August that the pub is “attempting to go all British for the food”.

He previously wrote in his Sunday Times column that he’d paid “less than £1m” for the property.

Clarkson initially thought that the pub, set on five acres of grounds, wouldn’t be able to open until 2025.

At the time he said: “There is some work to be done on the pub itself. For example, the cellar is too small, the gable end is falling down, the outside decking area is dangerous, the water is unfit for human consumption, the loft is full of dead rats and the lavatories are illegal.”

However, Clarkson promised the venue will feature bar billiards, darts, a table with his name on it, a garden and a room that can be turned into a clubhouse.

The Oxford Mail reported that aerial photographs this week showed a 5,000 sq ft marquee has been erected in the gardens, as well as outdoor tables.

Clarkson bought the property, which is around 10 miles from his Diddly Squat Farm, which was featured on Amazon Prime show Clarkson’s Farm, after he lost his appeal to turn it into a restaurant. This followed opposition from local residents, who wrote to West Oxfordshire District Council.

He announced in 2021 that he was looking to open a restaurant “full of pies and gravy” in his former lambing barn.

Clarkson purchased the 1,000-acre farm in 2008. It was run by a farm manager until 2019, when the presenter took over the site himself.
