Stéphane Borie's Michelin-starred the Checkers up for sale

Chef Stéphane Borie's the Checkers in Montgomery, Powys - one of only seven Michelin starred restaurants in Wales - is on the market.

The Grade-II listed former coaching inn, which has held one Michelin star since 2011, has an asking price of £575,000 with real estate agent Colliers International.

The 32-cover Checkers is currently run by chef-proprietor Stéphane Borie, his partner and pastry chef Sarah Francis and her sister Kathryn Francis who runs front of house.

The team's future plans are yet to be announced.

Boire and Sarah both trained with Michel Roux at the three-Michelin-starred Waterside Inn in Bray, Berkshire.

The team opened their first venture the Herbert Arms at Chirbury, near Montgomery, in 2008. They took over the Checkers in March 2011.

Following the acquisition, the Checkers underwent refurbishment which saw the launch of five rooms.

According to Colliers International, net annual sales at the Checkers are in excess of £498,000.

Ed Jefferson from Colliers International's Hotels team said: "Our clients acquired the property as a run-down public house and have totally refurbished the fabric of the building including complete re-wiring and plumbing.

"Immaculately furnished and beautifully maintained, The Checkers has held a Michelin Star since 2011 thanks to the efforts of Michel Roux-trained chef Stéphane - who has written a book on his business ventures called the Frenchman and the Farmer's Daughters."

There are only seven Michelin-starred restaurants in Wales. They are the Walnut Tree, Llanddewi Skirrid; Sosban and the Old Butchers, Menai Bridge; Tyddyn Llan, Llandrillo; Ynyshir, Machynlleth; Restaurant James Sommerin, Penarth; the Whitebrook, Monmouthshire; and the Checkers.

No one was available to comment from the Checkers about future plans at the time of publishing.
