Health and wellness lead spa and hotel design trends for 2021

Design trends in hotel spas and fitness centres show a leaning towards health and wellness, predicts creative design studio Sparcstudio.

Sparcstudio’s creative director Beverley Bayes commented: “It is inevitable that spa and wellness post-pandemic will become an ever more important and integral part of our lives. We are entering a new era where ‘health is the new wealth’, and a healthy lifestyle is recognised as a preventative medicine. UK hotel spas will provide an alternative to holidays abroad, as staycations are set to boom.

“Design will be absolutely key in the creation of destination spas that are unique, have heart and soul, and capitalise on the best aspects of their location in linking to a beautiful landscape or view. Many of the trends in spa design this year relate to our collective desire to connect with nature.”

Sparcstudio predicts key trends such as 'Japandi', a concept of Japanese design meeting Scandinavian aesthetic. Features include clean lines, minimalism and beautiful (often bespoke) furniture that is functional and stylish, as well as neutral, earthy colour tones, natural stones and timbers contrasted with soft linens and fabrics.

An increased interest in space and privacy could fuel demand for spa suites and couples' rooms with private changing pods, as well as micro gyms and private spa gardens.

A need for social distancing could see hotels and spas make the most of outside space by extending spa gardens, allowing guests to reconnect with nature. Experiences can include a yoga deck or dedicated area for 'forest bathing’, curved seating around a firepit, a circular walk through a herb garden, or bathing in a natural pool.

Sparcstudio also highlights important shapes such as curves, waves and organic forms. Colour specialist Pantone suggests that rock grey and sunshine yellow can serve as “a message of strength and reliability paired with the joy of sunshine-filled days to come."

Sparcstudio is an independent, creative design studio with clients including Sopwell House (pictured above), Dormy House Spa, Rockliffe Hall Spa, So Spa Sofitel, London, and the Spa at South Lodge for Exclusive Collection.
