Future of Simpson's in the Strand uncertain as it auctions off famous carving trolleys

One of London’s oldest restaurants is to auction off furniture and its famous silver carving trolleys as its future remains uncertain.

Simpson’s in the Strand opened in 1828 as a chess club and coffee house and was one of the first restaurants in the UK to win a Michelin star in 1974.

It was owned and operated by the adjacent Savoy hotel, which invested in a major revamp of the dining room and menu in 2017.

However, the restaurant appears to have been closed since 2020 and a press release announcing the auction said “a select few items” would be put up for sale as Simpson's prepared to enter “a new chapter”.

A spokesperson for the Savoy told The Caterer: "On 2 and 3 August 2023, the Savoy is pleased to be offering loyal patrons and champions of Simpson's in the Strand a rare opportunity to acquire a curated list of furnishings and artefacts that have decorated the historical site. While the stories, history and foundation of Simpson's remain, a select few items will be available to purchase as it enters a new chapter.

"As one of London’s most renowned luxury destinations, Simpson’s in the Strand has been captivating guests since 1828. From the exceptional cuisine to extraordinary hospitality, Simpson’s has long been a beacon of sophistication and class. The Savoy will be affording buyers a chance to own a piece of this legendary establishment and eagerly awaits the opportunity to share the exciting plans for its future."

The two-day auction will include furniture and lighting from Simpson’s restaurants and bars.

Also going under the hammer will be the restaurant’s famous Drakes silver carving trolleys, which continued to be wheeled around the dining room after its recent relaunch, as well as its collection of Wedgwood crockery.

Simon Rose, auction director at Pro Auction, said: “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for buyers to get their hands on some truly unique pieces that were once part of one of London’s most iconic establishments.

“We are expecting strong interest in these beautiful items, which have been carefully chosen for their design excellence as well as their historical significance."

The auction will be live and webcast online from 10.30am over the two days. For further details visit www.simpsons-auction.com
