The Resident plans first Scottish hotel

The Resident, formerly Nadler Hotels, has revealed plans for its first Scottish property in planning documents submitted to Edinburgh City Council.

Cannon Capital Developments has applied to transform the city’s Meldrum House, currently in use as an office block, into a 166-bedroom hotel.

The application says the 60-year-old building is “not fit for purpose” as an office in the current commercial market and has “suffered from neglect and a lack of proper maintenance”. It proposes refurbishing it as a hotel with a ground floor resident’s lounge.

The documents said: “Whilst the office market now demands more open, flexible and airy spaces that these buildings cannot provide, they are perfectly suited for the city centre hotel market, being relatively compact and often in great central locations."

The Resident is said to be “committed” to occupying the proposed hotel and, like its sister properties, would not have restaurant, bar or breakfast room facilities.

The hotel would join the group’s portfolio, which includes four hotels in London and one in Liverpool. The group rebranded in February, two years on from the departure of Robert Nadler.

Nadler stepped down as chief executive of the company in January 2018 following a disagreement with shareholders over the future development of the company. The group said earlier this year that the rebrand would include a new look and "a more hosted experience".
