QHotels reduces energy consumption by 61%

QHotels has reduced the energy consumption across its group of 21 hotels by 61%, smashing its target of 30%.

In 2009, all of the company's hotels and its central office were awarded either a silver or Bronze Green Tourism Business Scheme accreditation as a result of energy-saving initiatives that have saved 2,747 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Water flow regulators for all showers and digital gas meters that record data every 30 minutes are amongst some of the new ideas which have been introduced to the hotels.

To mark the achievement, the Queens hotel in Leeds replaced its iconic red entrance carpet with green turf.

The hotel's general manger, David Kanarens, said that reducing energy consumption has been a massive priority for the Queens.

"We know that corporate responsibility is high in the agenda of many companies and conference organisers who are constantly striving to find more efficient ways of working," he said. "We are passionate about ensuring all of our guest can reduce their carbon footprint whilst hosting an event at a QHotel."

QHotels plans to implement further green targets include ensuring a ratio of 70/30 in favour of recycling to sending waste to landfill, compared to the industry standard ratio of 50/50.
