Prime minister says reopening plans on track

Prime minister Boris Johnson has said that indicative dates for the reopening of society and the lifting of coronavirus restrictions are on track.

At a Downing Street press conference last night he said: “I don’t see anything in the data right now that would cause us to deviate from the road map, but we’ve got to remain humble in the face of nature.”

Outdoor hospitality is set to reopen on 12 April and this is expected to be confirmed on 5 April alongside information from the global travel taskforce on the reopening of international travel.

This is following yesterday’s lifting of restrictions, which saw groups of six or two households able to meet outdoors and outdoor sports were permitted.

Johnson said that Sunday 28 March had recorded the lowest number of new infections in six months and that hospital admissions and deaths were continuing to fall. The vaccine rollout has already seen more than 30 million adults vaccinated across the UK with a target of vaccinating all adults by the end of July.

However, he added that a “cautious approach” was “the way to get the results that we want”.
