Nominations open for fifth edition of the Basque Culinary World Prize

Nominations for the fifth Edition of the annual Basque Culinary World Prize, that celebrates chefs who ‘transform society through gastronomy’, are open until 4 May 2020.

The annual award is calling for nominations from professionals and institutions within the gastronomic sector for chefs who have had a ‘transformative impact’ in areas ranging from innovation and technology to education and the environment, and health, social and economic development.

The winner will devote the €100,000 prize money to an initiative of their choice that demonstrates the transformative power of gastronomy.

Anyone with a professional culinary background can be nominated for the award. In 2019 food waste campaigner Doug McMaster of Silo in Hackney, East London was shortlisted, and in 2018 Scottish chef and philanthropist Jock Zonfrillo (pictured) of restaurant Orana in Adelaide, Australia was crowned winner.

To date over 450 chefs from 42 countries have been nominated and the prize has successfully championed their work at the forefront of change, including inspirational stories of individuals who choose to use their knowledge and skills to highlight global issues such as climate change, food waste and social development.
