Businesses could use NHS app for guest ‘proof of vaccination’

Businesses could use the NHS Covid app to confirm guests have been vaccinated in a similar way to how they use it to check in guests using the QR code scanner.

Speaking to the BBC, MP Nadhim Zahawi, who has been appointed to oversee the roll-out of the vaccine, said: “I think you’ll probably find restaurants and bars and cinemas and other venues, sports venues, will probably also use that system, as they’ve done with the app.”

He added: “You’ll probably find many service providers will want to engage with this in the way they did with the app.”

However, chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Michael Gove, speaking to Sky News, clarified 'vaccine passports' will not be required of guests looking to visit hospitality premises.

Since reopening, hospitality venues have had to take the name and contact details of parties visiting their premises, keep these records for 21 days and provide the data to NHS Test and Trace if requested. Alternatively, QR codes are available to businesses which customers can scan using the NHS Covid app to ‘check in’.
