M&J Seafood update MCS data on sourcing fish sustainability

M&J Seafood, part of the Sysco Speciality Group, has updated its information for chefs and caterers with regards to which fish and seafood is currently rated 5 (fish to avoid) by the MCS (Marine Conservation Society).

The updated list can be found at www.mjseafood.com/dotherightthing and includes wild Atlantic salmon, blue marlin, Pacific and southern bluefin tuna, orange roughy, wild Atlantic halibut, parrotfish, starry smooth-hound, shark, wild sturgeon, yellow gurnard and skate.

“We know that keeping on top of what is under threat, and what isn’t, can be confusing for caterers, which is why as soon as we are made aware that a species is rated 5, we let our customers know, and stop selling it immediately,” said M&J Seafood’s senior category manager, Sarah Phillips.

“It’s also why we have created our ‘Simply Sustainable List’ which can be accessed by visiting www.mjseafood.com/simply-sustainable. This is a regularly updated record of over 300 fish and seafood products that are rated 1-3 by the Marine Conservation Society or certified sustainable to the Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council's environmental standard.

"Purchasing fish and seafood on the ‘Simply Sustainable List’ will also make it easier for restaurants to become members of the Sustainable Restaurant Association and the Sustainable Fish Cities scheme, both of which prove to consumers that a restaurant is buying sustainably.”
