Spanish hotel group Meliá Hotels International has announced it is to enter Newcastle with a second property in the UK under its contemporary city centre Innside by Meliá brand.
The 160-bedroom Innside Newcastle will join a sister property in Manchester, which opened with 208 bedrooms in 2015.
Due to open in 2019, the hotel will be developed in a vacant office building on the banks of the River Tyne. Meliá has been granted a 25-year contract to manage the hotel by the owner, real estate group Union Property Services.
Raj Sehgal, managing director of Union Property Services, said the the project will be "a huge step towards the Newcastle's Riverside transformation, and a new hospitality benchmark within the city of the city".
Gabriel Escarrer, vice chairman and chief executive, Meliá Hotels International, added: "Of all of our brands, Innside by Meliá has had the strongest growth over the past five years due to its international appeal. This has attracted investors and hotel owners all over the world to the brand."
Innside by Meliá is currently located in 40 sites.
Meliá also operates two other hotels in the UK: the 581-bedroom Meliá White House in Regent's Park, London, and the 157-bedroom ME London, on Aldwych. The company has already announced plans to open Innside by Meliá in Birmingham, with a 180 bedroom hotel, and Glasgow (175 bedrooms).
Alongside Innside, Meliá operates a further six brands - Gran Meliá, Meliá Hotels & Resorts, Paradisus Resorts, ME by Meliá, Tryp by Wyndham and Sol Hotels - across more than 370 hotels, open and under development, worldwide.
