Carlton Hotel Collection's £20m Market Street hotel in Edinburgh is now expected to open in summer 2018.
The hotel group is working in partnership with developer EDI Group to build the 98-bedroom, seven-storey design boutique hotel within Edinburgh's Unesco World Heritage and Old Town Conservation Area on Market Street, at a site which has lain derelict for more than 50 years.
The construction, first begun in May 2016 and originally anticipated for a September 2017 opening, has proved "a huge design challenge" according to the group, with the site surrounded by historic buildings on three sides and by the busy Market Street and Waverley Station in front.
But now the steel frame of the building is in place, work will now accelerate. On the top floor will be Nor'loft, a Champagne lounge with views across the city.
EDI Group's operations director Eric Adair said: "Creating and constructing a fitting design that works for Market Street has been a challenge for all of the team involved. While there is still much to be done, I have no doubt that the hotel will be a vital addition to the city's hospitality offering for visitors and residents alike in what is a spectacular location."
Andy McLinden, managing director of main contractor ISG's UK Construction north and Scotland businesses, added: "This is a transformational project for one of the few remaining new build sites in the Old Town area, with a design and exacting specification worthy of this key strategic location."
The Carlton Hotel Collection is part of Hotel Management International, which owns, operates and manages 10 hotels across Europe, with one in the UK: the Carlton George in Glasgow. The EDI Group is a property development and investment business, and a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Edinburgh Council.
