Man appears in court on Kinloch Lodge fire charges

Michael Duncan has appeared in court on charges connected to the fire that broke out at the luxury Kinloch Lodge hotel earlier this month.

Duncan, 25, from Oban, appeared at Portree Sheriff Court on 10 January, charged with offences including assault, assault to injury, wilful fireraising and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He entered no plea and was granted bail. The court has yet to set the date of his next appearance.

Police officers were called to the three-red-AA-star, 19-bedroom hotel on the Isle of Skye soon after 3am on 9 January following a report of a disturbance. Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene to extinguish a fire within a room at the building. Police confirmed nobody was injured as a result of the incident.

It is believed the fire started in an area of the hotel used for staff accommodation.

Kinloch Lodge, owned by the Macdonald family, was recently named Luxury Hotel of the Year in the 2019 Good Hotel Guide.
