Gerard Basset (pictured, centre) has been awarded a Master of Science in wine management from the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).
He was conferred this latest award at a ceremony in London last week attended by both the director of the OIV MSc, Nicolas Goldschmidt, and the creator of the OIV MSc, Michel Bourqui.
Basset co-founded the Hotel du Vin Group with Robin Hutson, and is now the co-owner of Hotel TerraVina in the New Forest with his wife, Nina. He became the ASI World Champion Sommelier in 2010, was awarded the Catey Special Award in 2010, and in 2011 was awarded an OBE for Services to Hospitality.
He remains the only person in the world to hold the Master of Wine, Master Sommelier and MBA simultaneously and now joins a group of some 500 international alumni.
Basset said: "I have always been motivated to know more about my industry. The world of wine is ever-evolving, it is important to keep learning and I find that following high-level wine programmes, such as the OIV MSc, is a great way to do so. In addition, I absolutely love the challenge that high-level wine courses and examinations brings on oneself. I must add that I am extremely lucky to have the wonderful support of my wife Nina to help me take on all those challenges over the years."
Goldschmidt said: "For 30 years the OIV MSc in wine management has prepared some great talents to drive the agenda for the global business of wine. Each year, the 15 participants to the OIV MSc travel together to 25 countries around the world to meet some of the most representative wine professionals (producers, importers, distributors, promotional bodies, press, consultants) and follow courses of management. Our alumni benefit from an exceptional network and become business leaders, holding senior management positions around the world. Gerard joins an elite alumnus and we are honoured to bestow this achievement on him."
