Michelin has awarded its first batch of key awards to hotels in the UK and Ireland today, with the likes of Le Manoir, Gleneagles and the Connaught receiving accolades.

Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons in Oxfordshire, Gleneagles in Auchterarder and the Connaught in Mayfair are among the first cohort of hotels to receive Michelin keys in a presentation ceremony in London today.

Similar to Michelin stars, the keys are a three-tiered award designed to highlight the best places to stay across the globe. Hotels can be rated as one key (a special place to stay), two keys (an exceptional stay) or three keys (an extraordinary stay).

Michelin recognised 123 hotels in the UK and Ireland with keys, with 72 hotels receiving one key, 37 hotels receiving two keys and 14 hotels receiving the highest accolade of three keys.

Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons, Gleneagles and the Connaught hotel were among the recipients of three Michelin keys.

What are Michelin Keys?

Michelin announced the launch of the key rating in 2023 and awarded them to hotels in Japan, Italy, Spain, France and the US this year.

Much like Michelin stars, the keys are judged by anonymous inspectors visiting top hotels across the country. And similarly, there is no quota for the number of hotels that will win keys in a year – it’s down to the inspectors to decide who is worthy.

This isn’t the first new award that Michelin have released in recent years. In 2021 it released the names of the first UK restaurants to win the green Michelin star to recognise sustainable practice.
