Pub owned by England cricketers to reopen after fire

A pub owned by England cricketers Harry Gurney and Stuart Broad is to reopen a year after it was almost destroyed in a fire.

The Tap and Run in Upper Broughton, Melton Mowbray, was damaged when laundry ignited in a tumble dryer in the early hours of 11 June 2022.

It will reopen on 26 June with the majority of the original team set to return, led by Jack Whitehead, Anna Mooney and Laura Symington.

Some £1.3m has been spent on a refurbishment, which has seen the creation of a more spacious bar area and additional fixed seating to create more dining areas throughout the pub.

Interiors firm Sarum Design worked with the team to create a nature-inspired design including oak tables, marble bar tops and rattan planters.

Gurney said: “While it was devastating to have to close our doors due to the fire, it has given us an unexpected opportunity to make some improvements which we know our customers will be delighted with.”

The Tap and Run is part of Gurney and Broad’s Cat and Wickets Pub Company. Last year the group purchased its second pub, the Griffin Inn in Swithland, Leicestershire, after securing investment from Peach Pubs founder, Lee Cash.
