D&D London's bars to go plastic free

D&D London has announced that its bars will be plastic free as it joins a growing industry move away from materials that are harmful to the environment.

The new Mindful City campaign will see plastic banned across the group in a move that sees straws banished.

Restaurant and bar group D&D London joins companies including Oakman Inns, Liberation Group, Halloumi Glasgow, Hawksmoor, JD Wetherspoon and the Breakfast Club in banning straws after campaigns highlighted their devastating impact on wildlife.

The group's restaurants will also have a new focus on promoting "wellness and fitness for body and soul".

Venues will host fitness classes, mindful menus and a speakers series in collaboration with non-alcoholic spirits brand Seedlip.

Des Gunewardena, CEO and chairman of D&D, said: "As restaurateurs, sustainability and caring for the environment generally have been central to how we run our business for years.

"We are also now focusing on giving more choice to customers who want to eat more healthily by choosing vegetarian and vegan options.

"Last year one of D&D's most successful initiatives was the launch of a weekly Vegan Brunch at Alcazar, our restaurant in Paris."

The launch of the Mindful City campaign has coincided with the unveiling of a sculpture outside Fiume restaurant, Battersea, London, made of recycled glass Belu water bottles.

Belu donates 100% of its profits to WaterAid, which will be D&D's charity partner for its campaign.

D&D will offer an optional £1 to every bill until 13 February, as well as a hosting a Charity Bake off at Bluebird and a celebrity Comedy show at Old Bengal Bar. Any money donated through restaurant bills before 31 January will be doubled by the UK Government.
