Seaspace takes over the former site of the Sands Resort hotel, which was sold to Watergate Bay in December 2022.
Seaspace is set to launch in October as Cornwall’s first coastal aparthotel in the former site of the Sands Resort hotel.
The 72-bedroom Sands Resort hotel in Newquay was owned by Nicholas Malcolm and became known as the first purpose-built family resort in Cornwall until it was bought by Watergate Bay in December 2022.
At the time, Watergate Bay said it will redevelop and operate the site under Beach Retreats, the group’s holiday letting agency for self-catering accommodation on the South West coast.
Although Seaspace is part of Watergate Bay and Beach Retreat, The Caterer understands it is being marketed as a standalone brand, separate to its owners.
Once open, Seaspace: Porth will offer 56 self-catering spaces split between studios and two or three-bedroom apartments, complete with a kitchen, dining table and lounge area.
Guests will have access to the lobby café and deli, as well as a bar and restaurant serving woodfired pizzas and small sharing plates.
In terms of amenities, Seaspace will include a 19-metre pool, a children’s pool, a gym with a selection of fitness programmes, and a five-court padel tennis club.
Locals from Cornwall will also be able to purchase membership schemes for the gym, pool and padel tennis.
The flagship Seaspace is due to expand after it was granted planning permission for a further two apartments and 14 lodges.
Ben Harper, chief executive of Seaspace, said: “Seaspace will be stepping into new territory, moving away from the conventional hotel and self-catering accommodation models to put freedom and community first – without compromising on quality. We’re enjoying breathing new life into the space, and look forward to creating a place where everyone feels like they belong.”
It comes after sister brand Another Place announced plans for expansion with the addition of the Machrie hotel and golf course in Islay late last year.
