Brighton's Coal Shed restaurant to relocate in 2024

Brighton’s acclaimed Coal Shed restaurant is to relocate to a larger venue in the city next spring.

The steak and seafood restaurant, which was launched in 2011 by Raz Helalat, will reopen in a larger 142-cover site on Brighton’s North Street.

A new concept run by Helalat’s Black Rock Restaurants Group is being developed to take over the original location.

The relocated Coal Shed will occupy a former orangery building with high glass ceilings and three private dining spaces for up to 60 guests. It will feature an open fire kitchen, an ageing room for meats and a bar area with banquet seating at the entrance to the restaurant.

Menus will still focus on cooking over flames, with a refreshed a la carte menu on offer alongside signature steaks and daily-changing sharing specials.

“We’ve always envisioned moving the Coal Shed into a bigger location and now, as we edge closer to our thirteenth year at Boyce’s Street, it feels like the right time,” said Helalat.

“The move is all about offering customers the full dining experience that I have always dreamed of.

“Needless to say we’ll continue serving our favourite dishes with the same warm hospitality to customers right up until the move in spring, but are really excited about this new era for Coal Shed.”

The Black Rock Restaurant Group also includes Coal Shed in London’s One Tower Bridge development and the Salt Room, Burnt Orange and Tutto in Brighton.

Burnt Orange, which opened in 2021, received rave reviews from Giles Coren in The Times and Jay Rayner in The Observer and was awarded a Bib Gourmand in the 2022 Michelin Guide.
