Boxpark reveals further details of Camden site

The shipping container leisure concept revealed it was taking over the Buck Street Market retail complex in London’s Camden in June.

Boxpark Camden has secured a licence to operate 60 traders until 11.30pm ahead of its launch later this month.

The shipping container leisure concept revealed it was taking over the Buck Street Market retail complex in London’s Camden in June after a long-term property management agreement was finalised with Places for London.

Buck Street Market originally traded as an open market for more than 30 years before closing in 2019 and reopening as a set of repurposed shipping containers in 2020 with 23 retail and 23 food units.

It is now undergoing a period of refurbishment to transform the three-floor market into a space for 60 independent traders, two bars and a rooftop terrace, which will be subject to planning permission.

The initial line-up includes businesses such as Chipsy, Philippe Conticini, Yorkshire Burrito and Black Bear Burger.

Boxpark Camden will also host cultural and community events, such as weekly quizzes, comedy nights, live music and resident DJ sets.

Ben McLaughlin, chief operating officer at Boxpark, said: “We are committed to flying the flag for independent businesses across the country, and this restoration will allow us to continue this in one of the most significant takeovers London will see this year.

“Following our Liverpool opening earlier this year, this next step for us is just the beginning of our upcoming expansion plans, and we cannot wait to see the response from the Camden community.”

Samantha Bain-Mollison, head of retail at Places for London, said: “We will be working closely with Boxpark as they work to improve the market and provide a welcoming and inclusive space in the heart of Camden that locals and visitors can enjoy all year round.”

Boxpark launched in Shoreditch in 2011 and has since grown to sites across Croydon, Wembley and Liverpool.

Earlier this year, a campaign was launched to save Boxpark Shoreditch from closure after it was revealed the venue was at risk of being replaced by a new development.
