Big Mamma’s La Bellezza in Birmingham to open 29 November

Big Mamma’s first restaurant outside of London will open in Birmingham’s grand Chamberlain Square next month.

Big Mamma’s first regional restaurant, La Bellezza, will open in Birmingham’s grand Chamberlain Square on 29 November.

The 150-cover site is said to be inspired by a “wild, overgrown courtyard in Perugia” and will feature flamboyant interiors including 5,000 vintage bottles on the walls, seven-metre tapestry curtains, handmade Murano glass chandeliers and a white and green Italian marble floor.

The menu will offer guests homemade Italian classics, including Puglian burrata and 24-month-aged prosciutto di Parma DOP from Emilia-Romana.

Big Mamma’s Il Gran Carbonara, served from an 8kg pecorino wheel, will be on the menu, as will the Mafaldine al Tartufo, pasta with a truffle and mascarpone sauce topped with fresh black truffle, and the Pici al Ragu di Agnello, pasta with a spiced San Marzano tomato sauce and slow-cooked Cornish lamb ragu.

Birmingham guests will also be able to try its Instagram-famous six-inch-tall lemon meringue pie.

Big Mamma co-founders Victor Lugger and Tigrane Seydoux founded Big Mamma in Paris in 2013 and have since grown the brand to 26 restaurants across France, the UK, Spain, Germany, Monaco and Italy.

They have opened five London restaurants since 2019, when Londoners queued up to enter its debut site Gloria in Shoreditch.

In 2023, Big Mamma was valued at £233m in 2023 when private equity firm McWin took a majority stake in the business.

Speaking to The Caterer last year, Seydoux said the group saw potential for more restaurants in London and was considering opening in Manchester.

Big Mamma’s success saw Lugger and Seydoux win the Restaurateur of the Year Catey in 2023.

Birmingham’s Paradise is also home to restaurants including Dishoom, Albert’s Schloss, Rosa’s Thai Café and the experiential F1 Arcade.
