The shipping container project will have capacity for over 40 independent food businesses if it receives planning permission from Camden Council.
Shipping container leisure concept Boxpark is set to take over the Buck Street Market retail complex in London’s Camden.
Boxpark, which currently operates multiple stalls in Shoreditch, Croydon, Wembley and Liverpool, agreed to a long-term property management deal with Places for London, the property company behind Transport for London, which owns the Buck Street Market site.
Places for London bought the 12,000 sq ft space in October 2023, which will have capacity for over 40 independent food operators once it receives planning permission for an extensive refurbishment from Camden Council.
Buck Street Market originally traded as an open market for more than 30 years before closing in 2019 and reopening as a set of repurposed shipping containers in 2020 with 23 retail and 23 food units.
Boxpark has committed to an initial investment to upgrade the site, which will be followed by additional funding in collaboration with Places for London over the coming year.
Simon Champion, chief executive of Boxpark, said: “It’s an exciting challenge for Boxpark to reinvigorate an iconic destination like Buck Street Market. We are committed to flying the flag for independent businesses across the country, and this restoration will allow us to continue this in one of the most significant takeovers London will see this year.”
Samantha Bain-Mollison, head of retail development at Places for London, added: “As the new owners of Buck Street Market, we are delighted to be working with Boxpark as they look to revitalise the space for all. We will be working closely with Boxpark as they work to improve the market and provide a welcoming and inclusive space that all Londoners can enjoy throughout the summer and beyond.”
Boxpark was founded in 2010 with the aim of regenerating local areas by supporting independent businesses and creating a sense of community.
It expanded outside of London for the first time in April, with its Liverpool opening at Cains Brewery Village.
Boxpark is also preparing to open sister concept Boxhall in Bristol later this year.
