Wine bar showcasing female winemakers to open with food by Victor Garvey

An organic wine bar, restaurant and shop showcasing female winemakers is set to open with a menu by Victor Garvey.

Carole Bryon, who previously ran the Grocery Wine Vault shop in Shoreditch, is crowdfunding to open Lady of the Grapes on the former Encant site on Maiden Lane in London's Covent Garden in mid-July.

The venue's wine list will feature 80 wines, the majority of which will have been produced by female winemakers with a focus on organic, natural and biodynamic wines.

"I want to champion women in the wine trade and make them more visible through our wine list," said Bryon.

Garvey, owner of Rambla in Soho and Sibarita in Covent Garden and formerly chef-patron of Encant (which closed in January), will oversee the seasonal menu of sharing boards and more substantial dishes at the 29-cover space.

Rewards for investors on the crowdfunding page include naming a wine pairing menu, a producer-signed bottle, hampers, an invitation to the opening party and a free wine masterclass. So far £735 has been raised of its £250,000 target ahead of the cut-off date of 4 July.

Garvey closed Encant after only 20 months following a buy-out of investors, which saw Garvey take ownership Sibarita and Rambla under the umbrella of Garvey Restaurant Holdings.

At the time he said: "Sibarita and Rambla opened in quick succession and both their menus feature several dishes which originated at Encant; it got to the stage where Encant had effectively become a development kitchen for the others, rather than innovating in its own right."
