Uber Eats trials dine-in feature in the US in potential move into reservation market

Food delivery app Uber Eats is trialling a ‘dine-in' feature for US customers, potentially signalling a move into the reservation system space.

The firm, which was floated on the stock exchange in May, is reportedly trialling the service in Dallas, Austin, Tucson, and San Diego, allowing customers to order and eat in with no additional cost.

A spokesperson for Uber in the US told Eater that instead a charge would be levied with the restaurant that "differs by market and restaurant but is typically lower than the fee they pay for delivery".

The trial also reportedly allows customers to tip employees if a restaurant opts in.

The move is the second service to be rolled out by the firm in recent months that cuts out delivery drivers from the offering. In April the firm launched in-app pre-ordering alongside its delivery business across Paris and London, following a similar trial in the four US cities where a dine-in option is currently available.

An Uber Eats spokesperson said: "We're always thinking about new ways to enhance the Eats experience."
