The Crown in Stoke-by-Nayland acquired by the Chestnut Group

East Anglia-based company the Chestnut Group has acquired the Crown in Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, for an undisclosed sum.

The 16th century, 11-bedroom inn has been sold by Richard Sunderland, who bought the business with his wife Sacha in 2003.

The Crown has become the 10th property within the Chestnut Group, which earlier this year bought the Weeping Willow, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, and the Eight Bells in Saffron Walden, Essex.

Philip Turner, who founded the Chestnut Group in 2012, said: "The Crown fits perfectly within our expanding collection of properties which seek to craft authentic experiences through engaging food and drink, home from home bedrooms and relaxing spaces sewn together with informal and warm service."

The Crown serves a locally focused menu and offers a daily fish board menu with five or six fresh fish and seafood dishes. It also prides itself on a 250-strong wine list, including 30 by the glass.

Sunderland, who spent his earlier career working for wine merchants Lay & Wheeler, added: "It has been a remarkable journey over the last 16 years, and we are extremely proud of all we have achieved with the Crown.

"The decision to hand the ownership over to the Chestnut Group is a natural one, we look forward to working closely with them in the transition period to ensure the best outcome for our loyal colleagues and fabulous guests."
