Stephen Carter has been appointed non-executive director of Marcliffe Hotel and Spa in Aberdeen.

The former Hotelier of the Year has over fifty years’ experience in the industry, having worked as general manager at the Caledonian in Edinburgh, Cameron House Resort on Loch Lomond, and the Old Course Hotel Golf Resort and Spa in St Andrews.

Carter was also heavily involved in the creation of the St Andrews Bay Golf Resort and Spa, which has since been renamed Fairmont St Andrews.

He is also currently chairman of Effective Hospitality Management.

Sir Jim Milne, chairman and managing director of Balmoral Group, which owns Marcliffe, said: “We are delighted to have Stephen join the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa board and honoured to have someone of his calibre as a non-executive director.

“Stephen is highly respected in the hospitality industry and has held senior management positions in some of the top hotels in the UK. His support and advice on the future strategy, combined with the financial resources of the Balmoral Group, will be key to ensure that the Marcliffe remains one of the best hotels in Scotland.”

Carter added: “Stewart Spence and his family have made the Marcliffe one of Scotland’s top hotels, and I am excited to help merge the values and aspirations of the Balmoral Group with the Marcliffe’s renowned hospitality. Together, we aim to create a unique Aberdonian welcome that will benefit visitors, residents, and Scottish tourism.”

Meanwhile, Marcliffe Hotel and Spa revealed it will “shortly” be announcing its new general manager.
