Sat Bains helps British adventurers to set Guinness World Record

Two-Michelin-starred chef Sat Bains has helped a team of British adventurers to set a new Guinness World Record for hosting the world's highest black-tie dinner party.

Bains, who attempted to set the record with team leader Neil Laughton three years ago, consulted on the menu which was served to eight climbers earlier this week.

Laughton and his fellow mountaineers took part in a trial run at Base Camp last week, and successfully travelled to North Col, near the summit of Mount Everest, on Sunday where they completed the challenge at 7,050 metres (21,129ft).

The group, which comprised six men and two women, wore dinner jackets and evening dresses before enjoying some Mumm Champagne and tucking into a three-course menu designed by Bains featuring miso soup, lamb tagine and chocolate dessert. Bains collaborated with Truefoods to deliver freeze-dried products, which required only hot water, for the party.

Meanwhile, Mr Fogg's bar in Mayfair, London, and Greek spirit brand Mextaxa, created a bespoke cocktail to toast the occasion. Created by Simone Spagnoli of Mr Fogg's, the cocktail featured Metaxa 12 Stars, spiced butter tea cordial, yogurt powder and herb bitters.

Bains, who was listed 59th on The Caterer Top 100 last month, said: "Even though we weren't successful, it was a real privilege to be part of the first attempt in 2015, and I was only sorry that I couldn't join the team this time, having suffered a high altitude pulmonary edema last time. But it was great to work with Truefoods on this project and consult on the menu - it's been a fascinating process.

He added: "It was brilliant to be part of the supporting team and to put my learning from the first attempt into practice, and I'm glad they pulled it off this time. I hope they succeed in raising lots of money for Community Action Nepal, because I saw first-hand the devastation of earthquakes in the region and their people need our support."

After completing the Guinness World Record this week, Laughton, described the adventure as "a rather eccentric new world record" and added that the goal is "to surpass our £150,000 for struggling Sherpa communities after the devastating earthquake in 2015 which we witnessed first hand".

During the 2015 attempt, Bains suffered a high altitude pulmonary edema at 5,800m and was forced to abort his climb. However, days later, the area was hit by the Gorkha earthquake which killed nearly 9,000 people and injured more than 22,000.

Speaking on his return to the UK, Bains, who was in Kathmandu during the earthquake, told The Caterer

The expedition has so far raised £103,000 for Sherpa communities.
