Ronan Sayburn has been named the winner of the Gerard Basset award for outstanding contribution to the wine industry.
The wine educator and head of wine at 67 Pall Mall was recognised at this year’s Cateys, rather than the Taittinger UK Sommelier of the Year, the competition to which Basset was so closely linked as former winner and head judge, due to coronavirus restrictions.
The award was established as a lasting tribute to Basset, who died in January 2019.
His wife Nina Basset said: “Ronan Sayburn has been a champion of sommellerie for many years and was a personal friend of Gerard’s and someone he respected highly.
“As chair of the Court of Master Sommeliers, Ronan leads a team of like-minded and passionate sommeliers all willing to give back to their profession.
“During Covid lockdowns, Ronan has worked tirelessly to ensure that wine amateurs and professionals alike have been able to continue to taste and explore many varied wines through the brilliant virtual tastings that 67 Pall Mall have organised. His new book is also a triumph, exploring food and wine pairings and all things vinous.”
