Romy Gill closes Romy's Kitchen after six years

Romy Gill has closed her restaurant in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, after six years and is exploring options for her next opening.

Romy's Kitchen, which shut its doors for the final time on 1 August, helped to propel Gill into the public consciousness as she served healthy, traditional Indian food as an antidote to the curries normally found on the British high street.

Gill, who was awarded an MBE for services to the hospitality industry, told The Caterer: "It was a very hard decision. My lease was up, and I just did not want to carry on. I think I've done my bit in Thornbury, it's out of Bristol and I just couldn't justify it to sustain it there. Being in a small town, my restaurant was very much a destination place."

Having secured a buyer who would retain her staff, Gill is now looking to future projects, with her first book to be published in September. Zaika features the recipes cooked by Gill's mother and she plans to take several months to promote it.
