A leading architect best known for creating the world's leading luxury fashion stores has been appointed to design the interior of the 190-bedroom Peninsula London overlooking Hyde Park Corner.
US-based Peter Marino, who has worked on the Dior and Bulgari stores in London, as well as the Louis Vuitton outlets in New York and Los Angeles, is renowned for his tattooed biker look. He also works on residential properties for high net worth individuals and is currently designing the Cheval Blanc hotel in Paris.
While Marino will oversee the overall interiors of the £600m hotel, the food and beverage outlets are being designed by Archer Humphryes and CAP Atelier, with specialist lighting provided by Speirs + Major. The architect of the project is UK-based Hopkins Architects.
The key design team was revealed at the ground breaking ceremony of the property, hosted by Sir Michael Kadoorie, chairman of Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels (HSH) and the owner and developer of the property. The Duke of Westminster, representing Grosvenor, the freeholder, also attended.
Sir Michael said that HSH had spent "decades" searching for the right location for the Peninsula London, which he expects will become recognised as one of the world's finest hotels.
"We will welcome international guests and showcase the best of British culture, design, art and cuisine combined with traditional warm Asian hospitality, while also ensuring that the Peninsula London is embraced as a prominent fixture in the community and equally beloved by local residents."
Set to open in 2021, the Peninsula London is located on the site of a now demolished former 1950s and 1960s office building.
It will feature a 140-seat rooftop restaurant on the eighth floor, two further restaurants, a ballroom for up to 350 guests, spa, four meeting rooms and parking for 104 cars. The entrance will be located on Grosvenor Place, via a colonnade linking the lobby to an internal palazzo-style courtyard.
There will also be up to 28 luxury apartments, which will be serviced by the hotel, within the development.
Founded in Shanghai in 1866, Peninsula Hotels is one of the world's oldest luxury hotels groups. It currently has 10 hotels. London will be the second in Europe, alongside Paris, with further hotels under development in Istanbul and Yangon.
