New GM for Grand Hotel & Spa in York

The five-AA-star, 107-bedroom Grand Hotel & Spa in York has appointed Philip Bolson as general manager, as the property nears the completion of a £15m expansion.

Bolson said: “Over the years, the Grand Hotel & Spa has been a great success story for York and I am delighted to join the team as it enters a new, even more exciting chapter. We have really talented staff at the Grand and every one of them is committed to making sure that the hotel surpasses our five-AA-star credentials.”

Bailey, chief executive of Splendid Hospitality Group, said that with the redevelopment of the hotel being finalised, it was “perfect timing” for Bolson to join the Grand. “Philip has superb operational skills which are ideal for launching and managing hotels. His flair for imbuing his team with his passion for good service makes him the perfect fit for the job.”

The redevelopment of the Grand includes the launch of the 130-cover Rise restaurant next month and the opening of an additional 101 bedrooms in a new accommodation wing later this year. The expansion is expected to generate an additional £1.7m of annual visitor expenditure for the local economy.

The Rise terrace and brasserieChef Craig Atchinson will oversee the menu at the all-day dining the Rise, which will revolve around a “small plate” concept. Designed by Twenty2 Degrees, the interiors have been inspired by York’s industrial heritage and will feature an open kitchen, cocktail bar and heated garden terrace.

Bolson added: “The Rise will be a fantastic addition to the city’s diverse range of dining and entertainment options, and we can promise great food, signature drinks, exceptional service and live music in an environment which we believe will become a firm favourite for locals, visitors and tourists alike.”

The Grand Hotel & Spa opened in May 2010 following the £30 redevelopment of the former North Eastern Railway headquarters by the Cedar Court Group. It was sold to Splendid Hospitality Group, the owner of 20 hotels in the UK, in 2014 for an undisclosed sum.
