Mowgli closes Manchester University Green restaurant

Indian restaurant group Mowgli has closed its Manchester Oxford Road restaurant following a drop in student footfall in the area.

The site opened as part of the University Green development in 2019, close to both Manchester University and Manchester Metropolitan University buildings.

A spokesperson for Mowgli said: “The collateral damage caused by covid meant student footfall in the area of Manchester Oxford Road stopped entirely and is yet to recover to the level that makes sense for us to remain.

“This coupled with our need to concentrate on our full and pressing property pipeline means we decided to close our University Green site and concentrate on the exciting year ahead, with builds in Glasgow, Preston, Edinburgh, Bristol and Brighton.”

The group’s restaurant at Manchester Corn Exchange remains open.

Mowgli was founded by former barrister Nisha Katona (pictured) in 2014 and has since grown to 13 locations across the country. Its five upcoming openings are all due to launch in 2022.
