Michael Ellis appointed tourism minister

Michael Ellis has been appointed minister for arts, heritage and tourism in the latest cabinet reshuffle.

The Conservative MP for Northampton North replaces John Glen, who was only in the role for seven months. Glen, who was appointed in June 2017 following the general election, succeeded Tracey Crouch as parliamentary under-secretary at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Ellis, a former barrister, was deputy leader of the House of Commons from July 2016 until his promotion was announced on 9 January. He met with Steve Ridgway and Sally Balcombe, chairman and chief executive of VisitBritain respectively, yesterday.

Vernon Hunte, government affairs director of the British Hospitality Association (BHA), congratulated Ellis on his new role. "We look forward to working with him closely to ensure that the needs and priorities of the hospitality industry are heard loud and clear within government."

Really useful meeting with Steve Ridgway and Sally Balcombe from @VisitBritain today and I am looking forward to championing the vitally important tourism sector.
