Mandarin Oriental to open hotel on London's South Bank

Mandarin Oriental Group is to open its third London hotel, on the South Bank, in 2028.

The luxury hospitality operator will launch a 171-room hotel and 70 branded residences in a standalone building at the Bankside Yards development, which is centred around the railway arches between the Tate Modern and Blackfriars Station.

Four restaurants will open across the first and 19th floor of the building, and the hotel will also feature a spa with a fitness centre and 25m pool, an outdoor terrace and activity space, and function and meeting rooms.

The private residences will have access to the hotel’s facilities, as well as a sky lobby lounge, private roof garden, and central London parking.

The hotel will be a sister property to the five-AA-star Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, which opened in 2000, and the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, which is expected to finally open this autumn after a two-year delay.

“We look forward to working with our partners to create a world-class hotel and branded residences that will undoubtedly become a landmark destination in London's South Bank,” said James Riley, group chief executive at Mandarin Oriental.

The 5.5-acre Bankside Yards scheme will feature eight new buildings with more than 350,000 sq ft of offices, 50,000 sq ft of restaurants, bars, amenities, and cultural space, and more than 700 homes for sale and rent.

It will see 14 Victorian railway arches restored and made publicly accessible for the first time in 150 years.

Bankside Yards is designed to be the UK’s first fossil fuel-free major mixed-use development and its electrical power will come from fully renewable sources.

Mandarin Oriental operates 36 luxury hotels and nine branded residences in 24 countries and territories. The group said it had a “strong pipeline” of further sites under development.
