Man arrested on suspicion of rape at Groucho Club in London

A man has been arrested as part of an investigation into an allegation of rape at the Groucho Club in Soho.

 

It comes after Westminster City Council suspended the Club’s licence with immediate effect last week after it was reported that a serious crime may have taken place at the famed London venue.

 

The Metropolitan Police revealed the investigation is being led by detectives from the Central West Public Protection Team following reports of a woman being raped inside the Dean Street members’ club on 13 November.

 

The woman is being supported by specialist officers.

 

Over the weekend, officers arrested a 34-year-old man at an address in Hertfordshire on suspicion of rape. He remains in custody.

 

On 26 November, a Westminster Council licensing hearing decided the licence for the Groucho Club should be suspended for up to 28 days until a full hearing can take place.

 

The initial hearing was held after the police raised concerns that the venue had breached licensing conditions and had been the scene of a serious criminal offence.

 

At this stage, there is no suggestion that employees of the venue were involved in the commission of the offence, the police added.

 

The Groucho Club remains closed, with the Daily Mail reporting removal men were seen at the site.
