Luxury hotel and spa to open in Buxton following £46m development

Plans to develop a Grade I-listed crescent in Buxton, Derbyshire, into a luxury hotel and spa have been revived after first being announced 13 years ago.

Buxton Crescent Hotel & Thermal Spa is to be created at a cost of around £46m by a joint venture between Trevor Osbourne Property Group and CP Holdings. It will be operated by Danubius Spa Hotels, which specialises in the management of natural resource health spas across Europe.

Trevor Osbourne Property Group is the company behind the transformation of the former prison in Oxford into a Malmaison hotel and the redevelopment of the Trafalgar hotel in London. The group is also planning to transform the historic Guildhall and Assizes Court in Bristol into the city's first five-star hotel.

Jonathan Dawson has been appointed as general manager of the hotel, which is set to open in 2019. He has joined the project from his previous role as regional managing director of Macdonald Hotels & Resorts for the past three years, having previously worked as operations director of Swire Hotels and group general manager of the Scotsman Hotel Group.

Buxton Crescent will feature 80 bedrooms. It will incorporate the majority of the crescent and include the renovated Assembly Room. Guests will be able to bathe in the natural thermal waters of Buxton in the Victorian spa baths.

The crescent was originally the centrepiece of the fifth Duke of Devonshire's plans to establish a fashionable Georgian spa town in Buxton.
