The founders revealed they are “gutted” by the decision but expressed the need to streamline their operations across the remaining restaurants.
Indian street food restaurant and brewery Bundobust is set to close its Birmingham site a year after its launch due to a lack of “consistent trade”.
In a message on social media, founders Mayur Patel and Marko Husak said: “This is our 10th year as Bundobust and we’ve had some incredible milestone moments as our small group. Unfortunately, we’ve also reached a less pleasant milestone, one that we hoped we’d never have to do. We have taken the difficult decision to close Bundobust Birmingham, with our last day being Sunday 14 July.
“Despite support and enthusiasm from a great community, the consistent trade just hasn’t been there for us in our little part of the city centre… We are gutted, humbled and there will be lessons to take from it in due course.”
Bundobust promised it will “provide support” for its Birmingham team, a third of whom will be relocated to its other sites.
It has also reiterated to its teams in Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool that their jobs are safe and unaffected.
They added: “We love Brum and our brilliant team there, so this is not a decision we’ve taken lightly, but closing Birmingham will allow us to focus on making the Bundobust experience as good as possible across all of our other sites – and on other exciting future plans.”
Bundobust was founded in 2014 with the aim of offering a “contemporary update to the classic ‘beer and a curry’” and has received praise from Jay Rayner of The Observer for its “uncompromising and self-confident and, above all else, clever” food.
After opening its first restaurant in Leeds, the group expanded its northern footprint into Manchester Piccadilly in 2016, Liverpool in 2019 and most recently Birmingham.
