Hoteliers lead the way in 2017 Rich List

Hotel owners once again made up the majority of the hospitality industry's representatives in the Sunday Times Rich List 2017.

Topping the list of hospitality figures, and third in the overall list of the 1,000 richest people in Great Britain and Ireland, were David and Simon Reuben, with £14b, up by £900m from last year.

In seventh place overall are Galen and George Weston, down from fourth last year. They derive most of their wealth from retailing but their Wittington Investments arm acquired the Grand Hotel in Brighton in 2014 for around £50m, to add to its Richmond Hill hotel in Surrey. Both are managed by Kew Green Hotels.

Ninth is Hugh Grosvenor and the Grosvenor family. Hugh Grosvenor, 26, became Duke of Westminster last year when his father Gerald died aged 64. Grosvenor Group, which controls the Grosvenor Estate, an extensive property portfolio, includes the Chester Grosvenor hotel and the Beaumont hotel in London, which is leased to Corbin & King.

Sir David and Frederick Barclay fell to 15th in the list but their total estimated wealth climbed £200m to £7.2b. They sold their interest in the Maybourne Group two years ago for more than £2.4b but still own the Ritz in London.
