Hotel caterer fined £20,000 over ‘filthy' kitchens

The caterer for a Mercure hotel in Telford has been fined £20,000 after health inspectors were tipped off about "filthy" kitchens.

Warwick-based THG No.3 Ltd, which provided food services for the Mercure Telford Madeley Court hotel, pleaded guilty to five hygiene offences at Shropshire Magistrates' Court yesterday (4 March 2019).

Telford and Wrekin Council's inspectors had visited the hotel in February 2017 after a tip off from a member of the public and found the kitchens in both the main hotel and the Mill House wedding venue to be "filthy".

Inspectors found dirty fridges, freezers and floors; damaged walls, floors and ceilings; rusty shelving and a damaged ice scoop left inside an ice machine creating a risk of contamination.

THG No.3 Ltd was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay £1,620 in costs.
