Green light for Malmaison in York

The go-ahead has been given for the development of a 160-bedroom Malmaison hotel in a former office block in the centre of York.

York City Council has granted planning permission to Harrogate-based property business Yorkshire Ventures to transform Yorkshire House on Rougier Street, once the home of the Aviva insurance company, into the boutique brand.

Paul Roberts, chief executive of Malmaison Hotel du Vin, said: “We have long been fans of York, where Hotel du Vin continues to be a favourite for both locals and visitors. The vibrancy of the city means that it is also a perfect location for the Malmaison brand.”

Richard Jackson, chairman of Yorkshire Ventures, added: “We are delighted to be working with Malmaison and to be part of the team bringing Britain’s best-loved hotel brand to the historic and world-famous city of York.”

Work is expected to start later this year on the development of the building which, once opened as a hotel, will create 120 jobs.

Malmaison is located in Aberdeen, Belfast, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, Oxford, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, Reading, Leeds, Brighton and Cheltenham.
