Former Swallow Churchgate hotel on the market for £1.75m

The Grade II-listed former Swallow Churchgate hotel in Old Harlow, Essex, is up for sale for £1.75m following a full refurbishment.

The eight-bedroom hotel features an open plan, 90-cover restaurant and bar, and a function room with capacity for around 40 people. The venue also has planning permission for eight garden suites.

Swallow Hotels, which was previously part of the London and Edinburgh Swallow Group, went into administration in 2006 with debts estimated at £40m. The Old Harlow property was one of nine owned by investment firm F&C Reit Asset Management and put up for sale in 2008.

Swallow Hotels closed the property in 2014 before it was acquired by Longmont Properties later that year, which has since refurbished the hotel and is believed to be the current owner of the property.

The original parts of the property date back to around 1600, when it was a chantry house to the local church. It is believed the property was sold by the crown into private ownership in the early 17th century and the house was constructed around 1650.

Paul Barrasford, director in Colliers International's hotels agency team, which is selling the property, said: "The refurbishment has been undertaken to an exceptionally high standard and is a great opportunity for a new owner capitalise on this fantastic product offering in a strong trading location."
