Food writer Ryan Riley opens UK's first cancer cookery school

Food writer Ryan Riley has opened the UK's first cookery school for people living with cancer.

Life Kitchen was opened at the Lodge in Sunderland on Tuesday (4 July) in memory of Ryan's mother Krista Riley, who died from small cell lung cancer in 2014.

Krista had suffered with loss of taste and appetite while undergoing chemotherapy and Ryan would go on to host pop-up cooking masterclasses across the UK before launching a fundraising campaign to open the school.

Menus have been developed by Ryan and professor Barry Smith from the University of London, who specialises in creating dishes that are suitable for the changing tastes of cancer patients.

Life Kitchen was opened by Nigella Lawson and has been supported by a number of chefs including Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver.
